A Certain Ratio is a British post-punk and funk band formed in Manchester in 1978. The group emerged from the post-punk movement but distinguished themselves by incorporating funk, disco, and electronic elements into their sound, creating a danceable yet angular aesthetic. Their work was influenced by punk's energy and DIY ethos while drawing from James Brown and other funk pioneers. Known for tracks like "Shack Up" and "I Wanna Spend the Night with You," the band became key figures in the post-punk funk crossover of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their approach to blending rhythm-driven grooves with experimental production helped define the Manchester sound of that era.
